Sandvine Peer-To-Peer Policy Management extends support for Bittorrent and Direct Connect
Release 5.0 helps service providers manage the impact of P2P file-sharing on their networks
SUPERCOMM 2004; June 23, 2004 - Sandvine today announced important enhancements to its award-winning Peer-To-Peer Policy Management solution.
In addition to dramatically reducing the networking costs resulting from the explosive growth of file sharing protocols like FastTrack (KaZaA), Sandvine’s network equipment for service providers will now control traffic originating from both Bittorrent and Direct Connect, emerging file-sharing programs that are growing in popularity.
Release 5.0 of Sandvine P2P Policy Management incorporates a powerful solution for managing the evolving nature of P2P networks. Traditional attempts at shaping or “squeezing” file sharing traffic can impact end users by slowing connection speeds for uploading and downloading files. This is particularly true in the case of Bittorrent, which is growing in popularity in North America and Europe.
Bittorrent is the first P2P program to allocate bandwidth to individual users according to their connection speed - traffic-shaping (and thereby punishing) users who don’t allow others to upload from them at an acceptable bitrate. When ISPs apply external traffic shaping techniques on top of this, the Bittorrent client slows down to the point where it becomes effectively useless to the end user. As P2P protocols are increasingly used as legitimate distribution channels for software and other products, traffic shaping poses a direct threat to the broadband subscriber experience.
“Service providers need to address the cost impact of file-sharing without alienating their broadband subscribers,” said Marc Morin, co-founder and chief technology officer of Sandvine Incorporated. “This latest release of Peer-To-Peer Policy Management addresses the fast-evolving nature of file-sharing technology while continuing to protect the subscriber’s online experience.”

Sandvine’s P2P Policy Management solution is enabled by the PPE 8200, a carrier-grade 1RU that reduces the cost of file sharing using three distinct strategies: the logical reorganization of network topology, the redirection of search queries and the reduction of P2P protocol “chatter.” Sandvine’s patented technology allows the PPE to statefully inspect and redirect. Subscribers experience zero degradation of their online experience. Service providers experience a sharp improvement in bandwidth utilization and associated costs
